German-based institute lists out priorities for city’s development

Coimbatore: To assist the Coimbatore Corporation in improving the ‘ease of living’ in the city, a German-based institute has identified areas that need to be improved on priority basis.
On Wednesday, representatives from the institute held a discussion with bus operators, manufacturers, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and officials from transport department and city corporation.

A senior official from the corporation who attended the discussion said, “Bus route rationalization, bus stations and its facilities, bus terminals and their vantage locations along highways, logistics hubs outside the city limits and mini hubs for distribution of goods and services, extensive use of electric vehicle to control pollution, smart ways of solid waste management and mass transit system for the city were identified as major areas that need to be concentrated on priority basis.”

The institute would be providing technical assistance to the civic body to develop a concept in the identified areas and a detailed project report (DPR) would be prepared, the official added.

“The aim of the project is to transform the city into a sustainable, economically competitive and livable smart city through innovative solutions based on solid research of the local urban environment and challenges,” the official added.

Based on an innovation network of German experts, a skill development lab – Coimbatore Mobility Innovation Lab – would be established soon in the city, the official said.
