Woman duped of Rs 19 lakh in online gift con

THANE: A 42-year-old woman lost over Rs 19 lakh to an online cheat who conned her by claiming he had sent her a gift from the US and asked her to pay customs duty and take the gift.
A police officer said a couple of months back, the victim and the conman connected on a social networking site. He coaxed her to partner with him in a wine and juice business. After a few days, he said he wanted to send her gifts.

Soon after, a person, who claimed to be a customs official, called up the girl and said her gift had arrived at Delhi airport. She was asked to cough up Rs 68,000 as customs duty. When she refused to accept the courier, she was threatened with arrest.

On making the payment, she was told customs officials had found one kg gold and she would have to pay more money. She finally ended up paying Rs 19.15 lakh, said the police officer.

When the gift did not arrive, she realized she had been cheated and lodged a complaint.
